On Wednesday, 23rd October 2013 we proudly hosted a meeting in the West Indian Center in Chapeltown about the Lost CLR James Play about Toussaint Louverture. Present was the editor Christian Hogsbjerg and there were extracts from the play, which starred Paul Robeson. I learned a lot.
On Wednesday, Oct 9th October 2013 Cyril Pearce (University of Leeds) spoke about his research over many years into resistance to the First world War in Huddersfield and elsewhere. I learned a lot.
Thursday 6th December 2012 Shaun Cohen gave a talk on ‘the Luddites’
Which was universally felt to be excellent in his analysis of the historical context and was followed by discussion of where the Luddites fit into Left (particularly Orthodox Marxist) historical frameworks or indeed fail to.
26th September 2012 Quentin Bradley gave an excellent talk on The Leeds Rent Strikes 1914 and 1934: the battle for social housing and the birth of the tenants movement. Steve Skinner also talked about the impending ‘bedroom tax’ (reduction of housing benefit for the poor and impoverished) neatly linking past and current housing issues.
23rd March 2009: the Annual meeting was held, and then addressed by Ken Capstick, former Vice President of the Yorkshire NUM, who will spoke on the Miner’s Strike (among other things). 16th November 2008: Sean Cohen led a tour of notable historical sites in Leeds city centre.
